In the east of Groningen, against the German border, lay the municipality of Bellingwedde: a land of peat villages, forests and wide horizons. This porcelain thimble keeps the name and story of Bellingwedde alive in miniature.
A municipality with a story
Bellingwedde arose as the union of the church villages Bellingwolde and Wedde and remained an independent municipality for nearly two centuries. In 2018 it merged into Westerwolde, yet for residents and connoisseurs the name remains synonymous with this corner of eastern Groningen. Precisely such names deserve a place in a collection: they keep history tangible, even when maps and municipal boundaries change.
Between peat, forest and borg
The landscape of Bellingwedde tells of peat and labour: colonial canals cut straight through the land, flanked by fields and tree belts. At the same time you find surprising nature here, with forests and stream valleys towards Westerwolde. Historians especially know the Wedderborg, an age-old stronghold in Wedde counted among the oldest borgen of Groningen, which makes the region's past visible today.
Collecting the Netherlands in miniatures
Within the thimble hobby, Dutch places form a classic theme, and former municipalities such as Bellingwedde make such a collection extra special. They represent a piece of administrative and social history found nowhere else.
A gift with nostalgia
An attentive gesture for current and former residents of Bellingwolde and Wedde, for those with family in eastern Groningen or for collectors who love places with a completed history. At farewells or jubilees this piece always lands well too.
In short: Bellingwedde in miniature, Gronings and proud, preserved in porcelain.
