The Fokker D.XXI: a Dutch fighter
The Fokker D.XXI is a single-engine fighter aircraft that was designed in the late 1930s by Fokker for the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The aircraft was intended as a modern replacement for the older fighters in Dutch service. Although only a limited number of D.XXI aircraft were produced in the Netherlands, the plane demonstrated excellent flying characteristics and gained international recognition when it competed in international fighter competitions in Sweden in 1938, defeating pilots from several countries.
The role of the D.XXI in May 1940
During the German invasion of the Netherlands on 10 May 1940, the Fokker D.XXI played a brave but ultimately overwhelmed role in the air defence. Pilots scored victories against German aircraft, but the small number of fighters could not stem the massive German air offensive. Nevertheless, the D.XXI proved its worth as a fighter and earned a special place in Dutch military history.
Porcelain thimble with Dutch heritage
This thimble shows the Fokker D.XXI in fine porcelain. The design captures the elegant lines of this single-engine fighter, featuring the distinctive low-mounted wings, open cockpit, and sleek fuselage that gave the D.XXI its speed and agility. Every detail has been carefully reproduced, making the thimble a homage to an important chapter in Dutch aviation.
Collector value and tribute
For collectors of porcelain thimbles, Dutch military heritage, and aviation history, this piece is a valuable addition. The Fokker D.XXI represents the courage and dedication of Dutch pilots during a turbulent period. As a decorative object, the thimble brings a piece of Dutch history into the home. It is a fitting gift for anyone who wishes to honour the Dutch contribution to aviation history.
