Eemsmond: where river meets sea

Eemsmond was a municipality in the province of Groningen, located at the mouth of the Eems in the Wadden Sea. The municipality was formed in 1979 from the merger of several villages and had a strongly maritime character. In 2019, Eemsmond merged with the municipality of Bedum to form the new municipality of Het Hogeland.

The flag of Eemsmond

The flag of Eemsmond represented the identity of this Groningen coastal municipality. The colours and symbols referred to the maritime history and connection with the Wadden Sea. This thimble preserves those symbols on porcelain.

The Wadden Sea

The Wadden Sea is a unique nature area listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Eemsmond lay on this remarkable sea, where ebb and flood shape the landscape daily. The municipality had a strong connection with fishing, shipping, and the nature of the Wadden region.

A historical memento

Since Eemsmond no longer exists as an independent municipality, this thimble becomes extra valuable as a historical memento. It is a way to keep the memory of this municipality alive for future generations.
