A summer guest in black and white

Almost every spring the pied flycatcher brings a small spectacle to our woods and gardens. The male, sharply dressed in black and white, perches on lookouts such as nest boxes and branches, darting out to snatch insects from the air. His scientific name Ficedula hypoleuca has referred for centuries to this finely built bird now captured in miniature on this thimble.

The story of a migratory bird

Every autumn these birds fly thousands of kilometres southwards, far beyond the Sahara, only to return precisely to the same woods in spring. That navigational talent has fascinated ornithologists for generations. Anyone who brings this thimble home owns more than a bird motif: it is a tribute to one of the great travellers among songbirds.

Ideal for nest box owners

Many people deliberately hang a nest box to help this species along, because pied flycatchers readily use artificial nests. For those people this gift is extra personal: the image connects directly with their own garden. Bird count volunteers and nature guides also deeply appreciate such a specific token.

Combining and keeping

Place him next to other woodland birds such as nuthatches and woodpeckers for a complete forest feeling, or create a row of migratory species only. Keep the porcelain dry, dust-free and out of harsh sunlight so the black-and-white contrast is preserved. That way this little flyer keeps soaring through your collection for years.

Anyone walking along forest edges in May with ears open can surprisingly often hear him catching insects above the undergrowth. That moment of recognition makes this motif extra valuable and personally charged for many collectors, year after year without fail.
