Between Hasselt and Tongeren, amid Hesbaye hills and orchards, lies Bilzen: a town breathing history. This porcelain thimble with the flag of Bilzen brings its identity together in miniature.
Home of Alden Biesen
Bilzen's best-known treasure sits just outside the centre: the imposing landcommandery Alden Biesen, one of Europe's largest castle complexes where the Teutonic Order resided for centuries. Today the castle festivals, concerts and flower shows draw thousands of visitors annually. Together with historic farmsteads and churches, that complex makes Bilzen a destination for culture and nature lovers from across the region.
Between fruit and history
The town profits doubly: from the Hesbaye soil full of fruit trees turning white each spring, and from a past reaching back to Roman times. Walkers connect orchards with castle lanes, cyclists follow routes past chapels and viewpoints over the rolling land. Thus Bilzen combines calm, heritage and seasonal splendour like few places can.
Within the series of Belgian flags
Belgian municipalities form a classic collecting theme within the thimble hobby. With Bilzen a link joins in instantly recognisable to anyone who visited Haspengouw or Alden Biesen, lovely next to other Limburg places in the collection.
A gift with castle atmosphere
An attentive gift for current and former residents, visitors of the castle festivals or friends fond of history. As a souvenir of a Hesbaye cycling trip, this pennant does fine too.
Cycling the castle lanes during blossom season explains at once why Hesbaye is called the blossom region: kilometres of white and pink hang over the roads, and Bilzen sits right in that picturesque heart.
In short: Bilzen in miniature, Limburgish and proud, preserved in porcelain.
