One of Italy's finest fighter aircraft
The Fiat G.55 Centauro was designed by Giuseppe Gabrielli and first flew in 1942. Powered by a licence-built Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine, it combined excellent speed, strong climbing performance and heavy armament. Many aviation historians regard the G.55 as the finest Italian fighter aircraft produced during the Second World War.
Combat service in the final years of the war
The G.55 entered operational service in 1943 and was primarily used to defend northern Italy. Although production numbers remained limited, the aircraft proved capable of matching Allied fighters including the Supermarine Spitfire, North American P-51 Mustang and Republic P-47 Thunderbolt.
